The two villages are very different despite sitting only a short boat journey apart.

Where Varenna feels tucked beneath the mountains, Bellagio occupies the central promontory where Lake Como divides into its branches.

The ferry journey between them lets you experience both without wasting hours travelling around the lake by road.

Should You Start in Varenna or Bellagio?

If you’re coming from Milan by train, start in Varenna.

The railway takes you directly there, so it makes little sense to arrive in Varenna and immediately board a ferry without seeing the village.

The most natural order is:

Milan → Varenna → Bellagio → Varenna → Milan

If you’re already staying in Bellagio, simply reverse the itinerary.

If you’re staying overnight in Varenna, starting there still works particularly well because you can visit Villa Monastero early and enjoy Varenna again after returning from Bellagio.

Morning: Explore Varenna

Give yourself time to see Varenna before visiting Villa Monastero.

If you’re arriving by train, walk downhill from Varenna-Esino station towards the lake.

You’ll reach the ferry area first.

From here, follow the waterfront towards the historic centre rather than immediately crossing to Bellagio.

Walk the Passeggiata degli Innamorati

The short Lovers’ Walk follows the lake between the ferry area and central Varenna.

It gives you an easy first taste of the village:

• brightly coloured buildings;
• boats crossing the lake;
• mountains rising directly behind the town;
• Bellagio visible across the water.

The walk itself doesn’t take long, but don’t rush through it merely because your itinerary says “next attraction.”

Explore Varenna’s Old Streets

Continue into the historic centre.

Varenna’s appeal lies partly in its narrow lanes and stone staircases rather than one specific landmark.

You’ll find passages running steeply uphill from the waterfront and occasional openings with views back towards Lake Como.

Expect plenty of steps.

Comfortable shoes are much more useful here than elegant holiday footwear.

Piazza San Giorgio

Make your way to Piazza San Giorgio, the historic heart of Varenna.

The square is home to the Church of San Giorgio and places you close to both Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero.

From here, continue towards Villa Monastero.

Late Morning: Visit Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero is the main reason not to treat Varenna as merely the place where you catch the ferry to Bellagio.

The historic property combines a House Museum and Botanical Garden, with the garden following the Lake Como shoreline for almost two kilometres.

• €13 for the Botanical Garden;
• €15 for the Botanical Garden + House Museum.

How long should you spend at Villa Monastero?

Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours.

You could walk through more quickly, but the garden is precisely the kind of place where a rushed visit misses the point.

Take time to explore:

• botanical collections;
• terraces beside the lake;
• sculptures and architectural details;
• viewpoints towards the opposite shore;
• the furnished rooms of the House Museum if included in your ticket.

Villa Monastero’s hours vary by season.

For example:

• April–May: Botanical Garden 09:30–19:30
• June–August: House Museum and Garden 09:30–20:00
• September: Garden 09:30–19:30
• October: Garden 10:00–18:00

Do you need to arrive at a precise ticket time?

No.

For online Villa Monastero tickets, the date is binding but the entrance time is not. You can enter during opening hours on the date you booked. (villamonastero.eu)

That flexibility is useful if you’re arriving by train.

Should You Add Villa Cipressi?

Only if gardens are a major interest.

Villa Cipressi sits beside Villa Monastero and is easy to add geographically. Its garden entry ticket can be booked in advance.

Its terraced botanical garden provides a different experience from Villa Monastero’s long lakeside layout.

But in a one-day Varenna + Bellagio itinerary, time becomes the issue.

Add Villa Cipressi if:

• you start early;
• gardens are a priority;
• you don’t mind spending less time in Bellagio.

Skip it if:

• you want a leisurely lunch;
• you plan to visit Villa Melzi;
• you want time simply to wander Bellagio.

You don’t need three gardens in one day unless historic gardens are specifically why you’re visiting Lake Como.

Villa Monastero → lunch in Varenna → ferry → Bellagio

This also lets you arrive in Bellagio ready to explore.

Avoid an extremely long lunch if you’re visiting outside summer, when daylight and ferry schedules are more limited.

Early Afternoon: Take the Ferry to Bellagio

This makes Bellagio feel like an extension of your Varenna day rather than an entirely separate excursion.

How early should you arrive?

Navigazione Laghi recommends reaching the ticket office around 20 minutes before departure.

In July or August, give yourself extra time.

Don’t rely on an old ferry timetable

Ferry times change throughout the year.

Enjoy the Ferry Ride

Don’t treat the boat simply as a transfer.

Even though the direct crossing is brief, it gives you one of the best views of Varenna. If you want longer on the water, compare the boat tours from Varenna, including the 90-minute shared cruise.

Look back after departure.

From the water, you can see:

• the colourful village climbing the shore;
• the mountains immediately behind it;
• historic lakeside estates;
• the long shoreline around Villa Monastero.

As you approach Bellagio, the geography of the central lake becomes clearer.

Bellagio sits on the promontory separating the two southern branches of Lake Como.

Afternoon: Explore Bellagio

Once in Bellagio, resist the urge to create another long attraction checklist.

You have already had a substantial sightseeing morning.

Spend the afternoon exploring the village more loosely.

Walk Bellagio’s Famous Streets

From the waterfront, head uphill through Bellagio’s narrow lanes.

You’ll quickly encounter the stepped streets that appear in so many photographs of the town.

One of the best-known is Salita Serbelloni, lined with shops and restaurants.

The central area is compact, so you don’t need an elaborate route.

Look down side streets.

Walk uphill and then back towards the water.

Bellagio rewards exploration more than rigid navigation.

Piazza della Chiesa

Continue towards Piazza della Chiesa, where you’ll find the Basilica di San Giacomo.

This makes a useful turning point before deciding whether to continue towards Villa Melzi.

Should You Visit Villa Melzi?

This is the biggest decision in the Bellagio half of the day.

Visit Villa Melzi if:

• you love historic gardens;
• you’re not tired after Villa Monastero;
• you have at least another hour;
• you arrived in Bellagio early enough.

Skip Villa Melzi if:

• you’d rather explore Bellagio’s streets;
• you want coffee, aperitivo or a relaxed lakeside stop;
• you’ve already visited Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi;
• you don’t want the day dominated by gardens.

There is no reason to feel that Bellagio is incomplete without another paid attraction.

For many visitors, walking the town is enough.

How Long Should You Spend in Bellagio?

For a combined one-day itinerary, 2–4 hours works well.

Two hours gives you enough time for:

• the waterfront;
• main historic streets;
• Piazza della Chiesa;
• a coffee or gelato.

Three to four hours allows a slower pace or Villa Melzi.

Anything shorter than about two hours begins to make the ferry journey feel like a photo stop rather than a proper visit.

Should You Stay in Bellagio for Dinner?

If you’re staying overnight in Varenna, you can.

Just check the return ferry timetable first.

If you’re returning to Milan by train, I would generally return to Varenna before dinner unless you’ve carefully checked both the ferry and train connections.

A delayed meal is not worth missing the practical ferry you need to reach your train.

Late Afternoon: Ferry Back to Varenna

Your return journey requires slightly more planning than the outward trip.

That’s because Bellagio has no train station.

If you’re returning to Milan, your route is:

Bellagio → ferry → Varenna → walk uphill → Varenna-Esino → Milan

Do not plan a ferry that arrives in Varenna only five or ten minutes before your train.

How Much Ferry-to-Train Connection Time Should You Allow?

I would allow at least 30 minutes, preferably more when catching an important evening train.

Why?

Because you need time to:

1. disembark;
2. leave the ferry terminal;
3. walk uphill;
4. reach Varenna-Esino station;
5. find the correct platform.

The walk is not enormous, but it feels longer when you’re climbing quickly after a full day of sightseeing.

If you have only one practical return train left, give yourself a considerably larger buffer.

If You’re Staying Overnight in Varenna

Your day becomes much easier.

After returning from Bellagio, forget the station entirely.

Instead:

• walk back along the waterfront;
• have aperitivo;
• eat dinner in Varenna;
• enjoy the village after many day-trippers have departed.

This is one of the strongest arguments for staying in Varenna rather than experiencing it only as a day trip.

The atmosphere can change noticeably once ferry and train traffic begins to ease.

A Realistic Full-Day Schedule

Do not copy these times as transport times — check the live timetable for your date.

Think of them as time blocks.

09:00–10:00 — Varenna

Arrive and explore the waterfront and historic centre.

10:00–12:00 — Villa Monastero

Visit the garden and House Museum.

12:00–13:30 — Lunch

Stay in Varenna.

13:30–14:30 — Ferry transition

Walk to the terminal, buy/check tickets and cross to Bellagio.

14:30–17:30 — Bellagio

Explore the town.

Add Villa Melzi if it genuinely interests you.

17:30 onward — Return

Take the ferry back to Varenna.

Then either:

• have dinner in Varenna;
• return to your hotel;
• walk to Varenna-Esino for Milan.

This gives each village enough time to feel like a destination rather than a transfer point.

One Day in Varenna and Bellagio from Milan

Step 1: Milan to Varenna

Take a direct Trenord service from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino.

The reverse route currently takes around 64 minutes, with roughly hourly service and tickets from €7.40; equivalent direct service operates between Milan and Varenna in the opposite direction. (trenord.it)

Step 2: Varenna

Spend the morning exploring and visiting Villa Monastero.

Step 3: Bellagio

Cross by ferry after lunch.

Step 4: Return to Varenna

Leave enough time before your train.

Step 5: Varenna to Milan

Take the direct train back to Milano Centrale.

The crucial thing is not how early you leave Milan.

It’s how late you try to leave Bellagio.

Build the return journey first, then work backwards.

Can You Add Menaggio?

Yes technically.

No, I wouldn’t recommend it for most first-time visitors.

The central ferry network makes this route possible:

Varenna → Bellagio → Menaggio → Varenna

But adding Menaggio means adding:

• another departure deadline;
• another queue;
• another ferry ride;
• less time in each town.

If you have only one day, Varenna and Bellagio already give you plenty.

Save Menaggio for a second day.

Can You Add Villa Carlotta?

Again, possible but usually unnecessary.

But a serious Villa Carlotta visit deserves around two hours or more.

Trying to combine:

Villa Monastero + Bellagio + Villa Carlotta

means your entire day becomes organised around transportation and closing times.

If villas and gardens are your main interest, skip most of Bellagio and build a specialised villa itinerary instead.

Otherwise, leave Villa Carlotta for another day.

Can You Add Castello di Vezio?

Not comfortably if you also want several hours in Bellagio.

Castello di Vezio requires an uphill walk and deserves its own time. Tickets are €7 at the gate, or you can book the castle entry ticket in advance.

For a one-day Varenna trip, choose between two strong combinations:

Option A: Classic Lake Como

Villa Monastero + Varenna + Bellagio

Option B: Varenna in Depth

Villa Monastero + Varenna + Castello di Vezio

Both are better than trying to squeeze all four attractions together.

Varenna or Bellagio: Which Deserves More Time?

For this particular itinerary, give slightly more time to Varenna if Villa Monastero is a priority.

Varenna has both:

• the village itself;
• a substantial historic attraction.

Bellagio works particularly well as an afternoon destination because much of the pleasure comes from simply walking its centre.

If you’re visiting Villa Melzi as well, split the day more evenly.

Varenna vs Bellagio for Gardens

Varenna has the stronger garden offering if you want multiple historic properties.

Bellagio’s principal garden attraction is Villa Melzi.

Choose one village.
