Do You Need Tickets for Lake Como? Ferries, Villas & Attractions Explained

Do you need tickets to visit Lake Como? No: the lake itself is free. See which ferries, villas, gardens and attractions need tickets, what to book ahead and 2026 prices.

Updated October 2026

If you’re searching for “Lake Como tickets”, the first thing to know is simple:

You do not need an entrance ticket to visit Lake Como.

Lake Como is a destination, not a gated attraction. You can visit towns such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como, walk along their waterfronts and explore their historic centres without paying an admission fee.

What you do need tickets for are individual parts of the trip, such as:

  • ferries and boats;
  • trains;
  • historic villas;
  • botanical gardens;
  • museums;
  • castles;
  • organised tours.

So there is no single “Lake Como ticket” to buy before you arrive. For many first-time visitors, the tickets that matter are just these:

train to Varenna + Villa Monastero ticket + Varenna–Bellagio ferry tickets

Here’s what is free, what costs money and which tickets are worth buying in advance.

More to book around Varenna and the central lake — Bellagio, Menaggio and the villa gardens, all with free cancellation.

Is Lake Como Free to Visit?

Yes.

There is no fee to enter Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, Como or the Lake Como area in general.

You can arrive in Varenna by train, walk down to the lake, follow the waterfront, explore Piazza San Giorgio and wander the old lanes without buying an attraction ticket.

Likewise, there is no admission charge to walk around Bellagio.

Your costs begin when you use transport or enter specific paid attractions.

Is There an Official “Lake Como Ticket”?

Not in the sense many visitors expect. No single admission ticket unlocks Lake Como, and the different services are run independently. For example:

  • Navigazione Laghi sells ferry tickets;
  • Villa Monastero sells its own garden and museum tickets;
  • Villa Carlotta has separate admission;
  • Villa del Balbianello has its own reservation system;
  • trains have separate railway tickets.

The easiest way to budget is to plan your itinerary first and then list the tickets it requires.

What Tickets Do You Need for a Typical Lake Como Day?

For a simple Varenna + Bellagio day trip from Milan, you might need only:

  1. Milan → Varenna train ticket
  2. Villa Monastero ticket
  3. Varenna → Bellagio ferry ticket
  4. Bellagio → Varenna ferry ticket
  5. Varenna → Milan train ticket

Walking around both villages is free. You do not need to buy admission just because you’re “entering Lake Como”. Our Lake Como day trip from Milan plans that day in full.

Lake Como Ferry Tickets

For many visitors, ferries are the most important tickets after the train.

The official public boat service is run by Navigazione Laghi. On Lake Como it includes passenger boats and fast services on the Como–Colico route, Bellagio–Lecco passenger services and the central Bellagio–Cadenabbia–Varenna–Menaggio ferry network. (Navigazione Laghi)

Can You Buy Lake Como Ferry Tickets Online?

Yes.

The official booking system lets you enter the departure port, destination, travel date, departure time, one-way or return, direct services, fast services and vehicle transport where it applies.

For visitors staying in Varenna, that makes routes such as Varenna → Bellagio or Varenna → Menaggio straightforward to look up.

Can You Buy Ferry Tickets at the Pier?

Yes.

The main Lake Como towns have ticket offices next to their piers.

Navigazione Laghi recommends arriving about 20 minutes before departure, and warns that summer and holiday periods can bring considerable queues at the ticket offices.

In July and August, allow more time for a sailing that matters.

What If There Is No Ticket Office?

At smaller stops with no ticket office operating on land, Navigazione Laghi says you can buy your ticket on board at no extra cost. Board without a ticket at a pier where the office is open, though, and the fare carries a €1 surcharge.

Do Ferry Prices Depend on the Route?

Yes.

Fares are based on distance, divided into fare stretches, so there isn’t one fixed “Lake Como ferry ticket price”. Under the fares in force from 1 April 2026, an adult one-way crossing between Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio is €5.50, while the longest ordinary journeys reach €14.50. (Navigazione Laghi fares)

Do You Need Ferry Tickets in Advance?

Not always. For ordinary central-lake sightseeing, many travellers buy their tickets shortly before departure.

Planning ahead helps more when:

  • you’re travelling in July or August;
  • you’re visiting on a public holiday;
  • you need one particular sailing to catch a train;
  • you’re travelling with a car;
  • you’re taking a longer fast-boat route.

Do not confuse public ferries with guided boat tours that hold a reserved seat. The whole network is covered in our Lake Como ferry guide, and the routes from Varenna’s pier in our Varenna ferry guide.

Is There a Lake Como Ferry Day Pass?

Navigazione Laghi sells free-circulation (day) tickets and other ticket types, but whether one is worthwhile depends on your route. For the central lake, the one-day pass is €17.50 in 2026.

If you only travel:

Varenna → Bellagio → Varenna

two ordinary singles cost €11.

If you’re making several journeys, such as:

Varenna → Bellagio → Menaggio → Varenna

three singles come to €16.50, close to the pass price, so the pass pays from a fourth crossing.

Check the official fares before assuming that anything sold as a “day pass” saves money. Our Varenna to Bellagio ferry guide runs the numbers for that crossing.

Villa Monastero Tickets

If you’re visiting Varenna, Villa Monastero is likely to be the main attraction ticket you need.

For 2026, full-price admission is:

Villa Monastero ticketAdult price
Botanical Garden€13
Botanical Garden + House Museum€15

Visitors aged 15–25 pay €7 for the garden or €9 for the combined visit, and children aged 0–14 enter free. (Villa Monastero)

Should You Buy the Garden or Combined Ticket?

For most first-time visitors, the €15 garden + museum ticket is the better buy. The difference is only €2, and the House Museum adds the historic interiors to what would otherwise be an outdoor visit.

Choose garden-only admission if you’re very short on time, you’ve already seen several historic interiors, or the House Museum is closed on your date. Outside June, July and August it closes on Tuesdays, while the garden stays open on Tuesdays from March to October. Our guide to which Villa Monastero ticket is right for you lays out every option side by side.

Can You Buy Villa Monastero Tickets Online?

Yes. Tickets for both the Botanical Garden and the House Museum are sold online.

One rule is particularly useful: the booked date is binding, but the entry time printed on the ticket is not. You can enter at any time during opening hours on the date you chose, which gives train travellers useful flexibility.

If you want the date settled before you travel, the Villa Monastero ticket with an aperitif adds a drink on the villa’s lakeside terrace and can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead; our breakdown of the aperitif ticket covers what is included.

Villa Cipressi Tickets

Villa Cipressi is the other major garden in Varenna.

Unlike Villa Monastero, the historic house is a hotel, while its terraced botanical garden is open to visitors. The Villa Cipressi garden entry ticket can be bought online, and our Villa Cipressi garden guide covers the visit.

If you plan to visit both Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero, look at the joint ticket before buying separately: €25 for both gardens, or €27 including Villa Monastero’s House Museum. It is sold only on days when the Villa Cipressi garden is open, at either villa’s ticket office, and it is not sold online. (Villa Monastero) Our combined tickets guide explains when it pays.

Villa Melzi Tickets

The Gardens of Villa Melzi are one of Bellagio’s main paid attractions.

Admission is €10 per person, with children up to 11 admitted free. (Villa Melzi)

The garden opens for a spring-to-autumn season (in 2026 it closes on 1 November), with daily hours published on its official site.

Do You Need to Reserve Villa Melzi?

For ordinary individual visitors, no.

The official garden information says no reservation is needed and tickets can be bought at the entrance on the day of your visit. That makes Villa Melzi a useful flexible addition if you reach Bellagio earlier than expected.

Villa Carlotta Tickets

Villa Carlotta combines a historic museum with one of Lake Como’s major botanical gardens, across the water in Tremezzina.

For 2026, standard adult admission is €17.50, with reduced prices for over-65s, students and children. (Villa Carlotta)

You can buy online, including the museum and garden entry ticket.

Villa Carlotta is a bigger visit than many Lake Como gardens, so give it a planned place in your itinerary instead of squeezing it in between ferries.

Villa del Balbianello Tickets

Villa del Balbianello is the important exception to the “decide on the day” approach.

For the park-only visit, reservation is compulsory. Standard park admission is €15. (FAI – Villa del Balbianello)

If Balbianello is a must-see for you, book it ahead. Do not arrive in Lenno expecting to walk up and buy whatever entry time you prefer.

From Varenna, the cruise with access to the Villa del Balbianello gardens handles the boat and the garden entry together, and the Balbianello gardens ticket with return ferry tickets lets you start from Varenna, Bellagio, Como and other lake towns.

Which Lake Como Attractions Should You Book Ahead?

Book ahead

Villa del Balbianello: reservation is compulsory for park admission.
Private boat tours: particularly in high season, for sunset trips or for wooden boats, such as the shared sunset boat tour from Varenna with prosecco or a one-hour wooden-boat tour from Bellagio or Varenna.
Important guided tours: especially when a precise time is central to your plans.

Useful to buy ahead, but more flexible

Villa Monastero: online tickets are available, and your arrival time is flexible on the date you choose.
Villa Carlotta: online booking is available.
Train tickets: easy to buy digitally, and you avoid the station queues.

Usually easy to decide on the day

Villa Melzi: no reservation required; tickets are sold at the entrance.
Standard ferry crossings: although busy summer periods mean allowing extra time at the pier.

Do You Need a Ticket for Bellagio?

No. Bellagio itself is free to visit.

You only pay for individual experiences such as the ferry to get there, the Villa Melzi gardens, boat tours, museums, food and other paid activities.

You can wander Bellagio’s waterfront and famous stepped lanes without paying an admission fee.

Do You Need a Ticket for Varenna?

No. Varenna itself is free.

You can walk the waterfront, Piazza San Giorgio and the historic lanes without buying an attraction ticket.

You pay only if you enter places such as Villa Monastero, Villa Cipressi or Castello di Vezio. The Castello di Vezio entry ticket is €7 for adults at the gate (€4 reduced), and our Castello di Vezio guide covers the walk up.

Do You Need Tickets for Lake Como Villas?

Most villas open to the public charge admission, but the famous ones do not all work the same way. For example:

Villa Monastero

Garden, with an optional House Museum.

Villa Carlotta

Museum and botanical garden.

Villa Melzi

Mainly gardens; the main residence is not open for ordinary public visits.

Villa del Balbianello

Park admission with compulsory reservation; visits to the villa interior are arranged separately.

Villa Cipressi

A public botanical garden attached to a working hotel.

Check exactly what a ticket includes before buying it. Our guide to which Lake Como villas to visit compares them, and the best gardens on Lake Como guide focuses on the gardens.

Can You Buy All Lake Como Tickets in One Place?

No. Because the attractions are run independently, no single official checkout covers everything. You may need:

  • Navigazione Laghi for ferries;
  • Trenord for trains;
  • Villa Monastero’s ticket platform;
  • FAI for Villa del Balbianello;
  • Villa Carlotta’s website;
  • individual boat-tour operators.

This sounds more complicated than it is. For a normal day in Varenna you may need only two or three separate purchases.

How Much Should You Budget for Lake Como Tickets?

It depends on your itinerary.

Budget day

You could spend very little beyond transport: the train, one or two ferry crossings and free walking in Varenna and Bellagio.

Typical sightseeing day

Add Villa Monastero to the ferry and train tickets. At 2026 prices, the €15 garden-and-museum ticket plus a Varenna–Bellagio return by ferry (€11) comes to €26 a person before the train.

Villa-focused day

Add Villa Cipressi, Villa Melzi or Villa Carlotta.

Premium day

A private boat tour can cost considerably more than all your public transport and garden admissions combined.

So the useful budgeting question is not:

“How much does Lake Como cost?”

but:

“Which paid experiences matter to me?”

A Smart Ticket Strategy for Varenna

For a typical day, keep it simple.

Before travelling

Buy or check:

  • the train to Varenna;
  • a Villa Monastero ticket, if you’re certain you want to visit;
  • the ferry timetable.

In Varenna

Decide whether you also want:

  • Villa Cipressi;
  • Castello di Vezio.

Later

Buy the ferry ticket to Bellagio that fits the day as it turns out.

That way you don’t lock every hour of the day before you’ve even seen the lake.

A Smart Ticket Strategy for Varenna + Bellagio

A first-time visitor could use:

  1. Milan → Varenna train.
  2. Villa Monastero Garden + House Museum.
  3. Varenna → Bellagio ferry.
  4. Optional Villa Melzi ticket.
  5. Bellagio → Varenna ferry.
  6. Varenna → Milan train.

Everything else can be free sightseeing. Our one-day Varenna and Bellagio itinerary puts that plan into hours.

Should You Buy Every Ticket Before Your Trip?

No. Over-booking Lake Como can make the day unnecessarily rigid.

Book ahead when capacity or a reservation requirement makes it worthwhile, and stay flexible where you can. A sensible balance is:

Reserve Balbianello.
Pre-book Villa Monastero if you want the date fixed.
Know your ferry options.
Leave room for Bellagio, cafés, viewpoints and the weather.

Lake Como is not a theme park where every experience needs a timed reservation.

What Tickets Should You Skip?

Avoid buying things just because they’re marketed as a way to “experience Lake Como”. You probably don’t need:

  • a private transfer when a direct train works;
  • a private boat just to cross from Varenna to Bellagio;
  • several garden tickets if gardens aren’t a particular interest;
  • a ferry day pass when you’re making only one return journey.

Convenience can be worth paying for, but paying twice for the same thing is not convenience. For how the trains, ferries and buses fit together, see our guide to getting around Lake Como without a car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need tickets to visit Lake Como? No. Lake Como itself has no entrance fee.

What are “Lake Como tickets”? Usually the search means ferry tickets, train tickets, villa tickets, garden tickets or organised tours, not a general admission ticket to the lake.

Do you need a ticket to visit Varenna? No. Varenna is free to enter. Villa Monastero, Villa Cipressi and Castello di Vezio are separate paid attractions.

Do you need a ticket to visit Bellagio? No. Bellagio itself is free. Attractions such as Villa Melzi charge admission.

Do you need ferry tickets? Yes. Public Lake Como boats are ticketed services run by Navigazione Laghi.

Can you buy ferry tickets online? Yes. The official Navigazione Laghi system lets you search journeys and buy tickets online.

Do you need to pre-book Villa Monastero? Not necessarily, but online tickets are available. The date you choose is binding, while the entry time printed on the ticket is not.

How much is Villa Monastero in 2026? €13 for the Botanical Garden or €15 for the Botanical Garden + House Museum at full price.

Does Villa Melzi need advance booking? No, not for ordinary individual visitors. Tickets can be bought at the entrance without a reservation.

Does Villa del Balbianello need advance booking? Yes. Reservation is compulsory for the park visit.

Is there one ticket covering all Lake Como villas? No. The major villas are run independently and have separate admission systems.

What Lake Como Tickets Do You Need?

For most travellers, far fewer than you might think.

Lake Como itself is free. Varenna is free. Bellagio is free. The waterfronts, streets, squares and views that make the lake famous do not need an entrance ticket.

Pay for the experiences that add something: Villa Monastero for its long botanical garden and historic house, a ferry to see the lake from the water and reach Bellagio or Menaggio, and other villas only if those particular gardens and houses interest you.

You do not need to turn Lake Como into a stack of reservations. Buy the tickets that support the trip you want, and leave enough of the day free to enjoy the lake itself.

See the Garden, Then Stay for the Aperitif

The terraces run two kilometres end to end and most visitors give them ninety minutes. Book ahead if you are arriving on a summer ferry — the ticket desk shuts thirty minutes before the gate does, and that is when the queue bites.
