How to Get to Varenna from Milan

Take the regional train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino. It runs about eighteen times a day, takes roughly an hour, and costs around €7.40 in second class. That is the whole answer, and it is why Varenna is the easiest of the famous Lake Como villages to reach without a car — Bellagio, across the water, needs a boat.

By train from Milan: the short version
Route. Milano Centrale → Varenna-Esino, on the Trenord Milano–Sondrio/Tirano line. No changes.
Time. About 1 hour 4 minutes on the faster services.
Frequency. Roughly eighteen departures a day, so a missed train costs you half an hour rather than an afternoon.
Fare. Around €7.40 second class as a walk-up regional ticket. It is a distance-based regional fare rather than a yield-managed one, so booking early saves nothing — you can buy it at the station on the day.
One thing to check on the board. The station is Varenna-Esino, sometimes shown as Varenna-Esino-Perledo. Trains on this line continue to Colico, Sondrio and Tirano; make sure the service you board actually stops at Varenna rather than running through.

From the station to Villa Monastero
Varenna-Esino station sits above the village, on the hillside. Coming out, turn downhill and keep going: it is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk down to the water, and the descent is steep enough to be worth thinking about if you are carrying a case.
At the bottom you meet the lakefront. Turn south — away from the ferry pier — and follow the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, the walkway on red iron brackets that hugs the rock above the water. Villa Cipressi comes first, Villa Monastero a few minutes after it. From the pier the walk is about ten flat minutes; from the station allow twenty-five.
Going back up to the station at the end of the day is the same hill in the other direction, and it is a real climb. There is a bus, and taxis wait near the ferry pier in season.
From Bellagio, Menaggio and the western shore
Varenna is one corner of Lake Como’s “golden triangle”, and the central-lake ferry service links all of them: Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia, every 20 to 30 minutes from about 06:00 to 22:30.
Fares. A one-way passenger crossing between any two central-lake towns is €5.50. A central-area day pass, which lets you hop off in all of them, is €17.50 — worth it from the third crossing onward.
Time. Bellagio to Varenna takes about fifteen to twenty minutes.
Where it lands. The Varenna pier is at the northern end of the waterfront, about ten minutes’ flat walk from the Villa Monastero gate.
If you would rather have the crossing bundled with your villa entry, the Villa Monastero ticket with the Bellagio wine tasting includes the public ferry in both directions — which removes two ticket purchases and two queues at the pier.
The guided-day-trip option, and its one catch

And free time in Varenna on a ten-hour day is typically under two hours, against the ninety minutes Villa Monastero’s garden alone wants.
So the decision is clean. Book the day trip if you want three lakeside towns and none of the logistics. Take the train yourself if Villa Monastero is the reason you are going.
Driving, and why most people should not
Varenna is small, the lakeside road is narrow, and parking is genuinely difficult — one boat operator’s own booking notes tell drivers to arrive well in advance for exactly that reason. In July and August the village car parks fill early and the alternative is a long walk from the roadside.
The train removes all of it, costs less than the fuel, and drops you above a village you can cross on foot in fifteen minutes. Drive only if Varenna is one stop on a wider itinerary that genuinely needs a car.
