How to Walk from Varenna to Castello di Vezio

You have two useful routes.

Route 1: The Shorter, Steeper Path

This is the most direct route.

From the Varenna ferry/station area (our Varenna-Esino station guide shows the walk from the platform), head towards the Montecodeno restaurant. Beside it you’ll find the path climbing towards Vezio.

The castle describes the climb as quite steep but short.

Allow:

• under 20 minutes if you’re a strong walker;
• around 30 minutes at a more relaxed pace.

The path eventually brings you into the tiny settlement of Vezio. Follow the signs through the village towards the church and small cemetery; the castle entrance is nearby.

Best for:

• visitors arriving by train;
• visitors arriving by ferry;

Route 2: Scabium Path from Villa Monastero

The second route begins opposite Villa Monastero.

Known as the Scabium path, it takes roughly 40 minutes.

Villa Monastero → Scabium path → Castello di Vezio → short trail → Varenna station/ferry terminal

This works beautifully if you’re finishing your day by catching a train or ferry.

Or reverse it:

Varenna station → short steep trail → castle → Scabium path → Villa Monastero

This places Villa Monastero after the more strenuous part of the day.

Which direction is better depends on your schedule.

In high summer, climbing the exposed Scabium trail in the middle of the afternoon is less appealing.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Castello di Vezio?

Spring

Excellent.

Temperatures are usually better for climbing than midsummer, vegetation is fresh and the castle has substantial opening hours.

Summer

Beautiful, but heat matters.

If visiting in July or August, climb earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon, and avoid midday.

rather than trying to do everything.

Is Castello di Vezio Worth Visiting?

Yes, particularly if you enjoy viewpoints and walking.

The castle itself is relatively modest compared with Italy’s huge palaces and fortress complexes. Don’t climb expecting an enormous intact medieval castle filled with lavish rooms.

That’s not what Vezio offers.
